In the spring of 2018, after the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, and on the anniversary of the Columbine Shootings, playwright Lauren Gunderson released the rights to her one-woman show Natural Shocks for simultaneous national staged readings. I directed the reading at Linfield and turned the show into a chorus for three women. The piece meditates on the intersections between gun culture and domestic violence.
When the reading had concluded, I moderated a roundtable I had organized with Linfield faculty members to briefly discuss the issues the piece raised, and then we facilitated small group discussions organized around the following topics:
- Guns, Law, and the Second Amendment
- Activism and Social Media
- Hunting and sport
- Schools and No-Gun Zones
- Race, Gender, and Violence
The event was attended by students, staff, faculty, and community members.
